It’s official: Melchior, Wendla and all of our friends are coming back to Broadway this fall! The new Deaf West Theatre production of Spring Awakening will begin performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on September 8, helmed by Broadway vet Michael Arden. Although the new mounting of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s Tony-winning musical definitely won’t be a carbon copy of the original 2006 production, we’re getting nostalgic with these vintage videos of Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and the original cast from the Broadway.com vaults.
Opening Night
Most of the young cast made their Broadway debuts in Spring Awakening (Skylar Astin, Lilli Cooper, Lauren Pritchard and Gideon Glick, just to name a few), so the show’s opening night felt particularly electric. Broadway.com was on the scene to chat with the cast and find out why starring in Spring Awakening is like summer camp.
Backstage with Jonathan Groff
Before Jonathan Groff was the king of Broadway, he hosted a backstage tour for Broadway.com, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at “where the magic happens.” From Lea Michele’s dressing room designed with Urban Outfitters tchotchkes to Groffsauce’s autograph book for “famous people,” these guys sure have come a long way.
CD Signing at the Virgin Megastore
The Times Square Virgin Megastore may now be a Forever 21, but this video from the Broadway.com vaults captures the giddy Spring Awakening stars at their first-ever album signing. “To see all these people here waiting for us,” Michele said tearfully, “This is, like, a really big moment for me right now.” And now we can watch that moment over and over again!
Valentine’s Day Firsts
OK, here’s where things get juicy. We invited the Spring Awakening kids into Broadway.com's studio to dish about their first dates, kisses and crushes. We learned a lot—maybe too much. Did you know Lea Michele tried to stick her tongue in Gavin Creel’s mouth? Or that Lilli Cooper’s first date was at a Times Square Starbucks? Or that Jonathan Groff’s first kiss was in the bushes? Learn something new every day.
Valentine’s Day Dos and Don’ts
The Spring Awakening stars aren’t done schooling you in love just yet. If you want to score a date, write lots of love notes. Unless you’re Lea Michele. In that case, run over to them and jump on top of them (oh, and check out more fun Lea moments in her unedited green screen footage here). Other dating rules? Don’t wear tighty-whiteys, don’t talk about your ex, and don’t go on a date in a place that has a weird smell. Thanks for the tips, guys.
Hunter Parrish’s First Vocal Rehearsal
As much as we love the original cast, we have to admit the new class was seriously awesome, too. When incoming star Hunter Parrish had his first vocal rehearsal with the cast, Broadway.com stopped by the Eugene O’Neill Theatre to see the magic happen. We can’t wait to hear the songs of Spring Awakening on Broadway again!
